La transformación del pobre hidalgo Alonso Quijano al gran y famoso caballero Don Quijote es el fundamento de la novela de Cervantes sobre Don Quijote y Sancho Panza. Muchos lectores e, incluso, la cultura popular considera esta transformación como el momento en el cual Alonso Quijano finalmente perdió el juicio y, como consecuencia, todas sus aventuras absurdas son un producto de su locura. Mi estudio tiene el propósito de examinar la transformación de Alonso Quijano en Don Quijote no como una indicación de la locura real del protagonista, sino como una decisión intencional para escapar de su vida cotidiana y rechazar los inicios del mundo moderno. The transformation of the poor hidalgo Alonso Quijano to the great and famous knight, Don Quijote, is the foundation of Cervantes’s narrative about Don Quijote and Sancho Panza. Many readers as well as popular culture consider this transformation as the moment where Alonso Quijano finally lost his mind and that all the absurd adventures that follow are a product of this insanity. In this interpretation, the specific details of these various adventures lose all deeper significance because they simply occur by chance as a result of the actions of an insane person. In this way, the interpretation of this initial transformation of the protagonist can change the interpretation of the rest of the novel. My study aims to examine the transformation of Alonso Quijano to Don Quijote not as an indication of the insanity of this protagonist but instead as an intentional decision to escape the monotony of his everyday life and to reject the beginnings of the modern world. This interpretation changes the meaning of many of Don Quijote and Sancho Panza’s adventures, and as such this essay will also analyze many of these adventures to see how Don Quijote rejects the modern world over the course of the novel.
